Ancient Noto
” Allah protect a house in Noto
and clouds laden with rain be the lifeguard
I see it with eyes of remembrance
and I send it tears
I suffer nostalgia for home, friends
and the virtue of women
who parting, has left the heart in that land
with all of itself desiring to return,
my land! ”
(Ibn Hamdis, an Arabic poet who lived in Noto Antica during his youth)
The ancient town of Noto, was destroyed after the earthquake of 1693. It was under the dominion of the Romans, then under Arab domination and then under Ferdinand the Catholic. It was the birthplace of many prominent figures between the 14th and the 16th century, as well as one of the main military, economic and cultural centres of south-eastern Sicily. Surrounded by imposing walls (many of which are still standing) and by deep valleys meant it was never taken by force. Only the violent earthquake managed to destroy it.
