A museum where traditions continue to live “evergreen”
โCasa Museoโ – “House Museum”, is a creation of Antonino Uccello, a passionate scholar of popular Sicilian culture. For over thirty years, Uccello has collected and studied oral traditions, objects, work tools, artefacts that were disappearing from this peasant civilization. Through continuous cultural activities, the scholar kept alive the atmosphere and magic of arts, crafts, work environments and traditions now extinct. All his ethnographic material together with a valuable collection of glass paintings, figurines, billboards, burial objects were placed in various premises. These included the elegant eighteenth-century residence of Ferla-Bonelli, that he later purchased, the stunning reconstructed “casa ri stari”, the “casa ri massaria”, the “maiazzรจ” (little shop) and of the oil mill.
In the “casa ri stari”, is where the everyday tasks of a farmer took place including breadmaking, using the wood oven, the production of ricotta and other cheese, weaving and spinning with a frame. Food was stored in the “maiazzรจ” (wine, oil, wheat, cereals), plus working tools. The mill was rebuilt from the existing model on the grounds of the palace. The collection of Sicilian ceramics is remarkable, in particular that of Caltagirone: spoons, wooden ladles, religious artefacts, toys, Sicilian puppets, posters, nativity scenes and sculptures.
