Syracuse: where the Greek ruins, medieval architecture and seaside orchards are an idyllic backdrop for a still-bustling modern metropolis.

Ortygia, the historic heart of the city, which sits on an island in the centre of town. Pass by well-preserved Baroque palaces and churches, including the Duomo di Siracusa, a beautiful cathedral built on the site of a temple to the goddess Athena. Nearby, head to a terrace overlooking the sea and visit Arethusa, a fountain believed to be the home of a mythical water nymph, Maniace Castle, old street market, Archimede’s square.
