The Latomia was used as a quarry for the extraction of the stone with which Syracuse was built.
During the age of tyrants it became a prison; later it was used as a place of pagan and Christian worship.
Finally, in 1582, the Latomia was given to the Capuchin Friars who built a fortified convent here with a large and admirable garden.
